You Need Other People

This weekend I went to Albuquerque for a weekend reunion with a group of my best friends. I hadn’t seen these girls since graduation in May, so it was a much needed girls weekend. The entire time I was there I was filled with happiness and joy from being in the presence of my best friends again.

I saw this quote on my Pinterest last night that I had pinned several weeks ago and instantly the writing wheels in my head started spinning.

better things ..

You will need other people.

I need other people. I need my best friends.

As much as I enjoy my alone time. As much as I think I am so introverted and quiet. As independent as I think I am. I need other people.

My best friends have made several appearances throughout my blog posts. From sorority events to trips to Vegas, they have been an ever present group in my life for almost 5 years now. Since we are all entering new stages of our friendship because we all won’t be living in the same town anymore, our friendship will look differently. But that quote has made me reflect on why they are in my life and why I know they will continue to be.

You need people in your life who you trust.

Who know you and your ways and your characteristics.

Who you can have deep belly laughs with.

…understand your fears and questions about the future.

….you can excitedly plan and dream about the future with.

…can tell you that those shoes really aren’t that cute.

…can see you without your makeup and messy hair and still love you.

…can keep you accountable with your “healthy eating.”

…can drag you to the gym and give you a kick butt workout.

…but will indulge on the weekends with you on fatty foods and sugary drinks.

…will tell you that that guy is a jerk and doesn’t deserve you.

…you can show your most embarrassing dance moves to and they still think you’re cool.

…sing “Fancy” in the car together without anyone judging one others singing/rapping voices.

…will tell you that what you said was rude.

…you can share your happiest moments with or you not-so-happy ones.

…you can plan your next trips to see each other and know that no one will find an excuse to back out.

…you can talk about embarrassing things with and it’s not awkward.

…share frustrations with about work or school or your uncooperative hair.

…will yell at you while you’re driving but you know they’re just looking out for you.

…you can be “hangry”  (hungry+angry) with and they’ll know your shortness isn’t intentional.

…you can look at each other and think “wow. my friends are beautiful” because you truly believe that.

…keep you inspired to be a better person than you were yesterday.

…will call 911 if you don’t make it out of the sketchy Wal-Mart in 10 minutes.

…who won’t talk mad crap about you to someone else.

As badly as I wished I was just going home yesterday afternoon to do homework, and I would see them at the sorority house for lunch today it’ll never be that way again.

As we get older and our lives start changing and becoming more separate, our friendship will change along the way. But I know it will be there. It will be there in 8 years when we celebrate our year of turning 30. Or when we’re at a baby shower for the first baby in our group. Or as we watch each other get married. Or when one of us gets the new job she had been wanting. Because we are Amigas por vida! (friends for life)

I watch how my Mom has her certain close friends in her life and how important they are to her. Of course she has my Dad and my sister and I, but she needs other people as well. She needs her friend who she can call and talk about decorating with and discuss the decisions their children are making.

We need other people in our lives. People who know us. People who make us better people and you know will be there for you no matter the situation you face. And you have to be that person for other people as well. It’s not just a one way street.

Personally, I know that my friends sharpen me and that I sharpen my friends as this verse from the bible says: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17. Now if my friends were leading me down the wrong path or causing me to “stumble” I probably wouldn’t be writing this post, but that’s not the case.

Sometimes I would like to apologize for being so reflective and dramatic about things like this, but I’m not. Because this is what I think and this is how I feel and someday I’ll look back on this post and will be flooded with memories and joy. And I’ll be able to see how true things played out or how differently they did.

Birthday Weekend Recap & July Goals

So last weekend was my 22nd birthday if you didn’t realize that despite all my “birthday” posts. The CrossFit box I go to designs a special WOD whenever someone has a birthday, so Friday they made one for me.

WOD: 6 Squat Cleans, 27 Box Jump Overs, 19 Pull-Ups, 92 Double Unders, 19 Pull-Ups, 27 Box Jump overs, 6 Squat Cleans.

The numbers 19 & 92 make the year I was born. The number 6 and 27, form June 27th! Nifty right?! They made me feel special, until we actually had to do the workout. Then I realized it wasn’t so special that I was dripping with sweat, and everyone was cursing my birthday workout. Haha just kidding. It was a great workout.

On Saturday I went to Lubbock, Texas to meet up with a sorority sister to celebrate our birthdays since we’re both June babies. We had lunch and tried to go shopping, but decided getting fro-yo was a better idea.

Then we spent our afternoon at a outdoor bar restaurant place and we talked for hours. When you go from seeing someone almost every day during the week to almost once a month, you have a lot of catching up to do.

Later we went out to a few bars and had a great time. Then Sunday morning we split ways and headed back home. My time with her was too short, but I’m so happy I got to see her.

Anyways time for some July goals. You would think that since my birthday is at the end of June I would be ready and welcoming for July to arrive, but I’m not. I’m still surprised it’s here.

If I add any more goals on there I’ll have a hard time checking them off, so I’ll be realistic and stop right there. Have a joyous first day of July!

Do you have any goals set for July?

5 on Friday: The Day I Just Ate Chocolate

1.  Chocolate. On Wednesday it seemed like all I ate was chocolate. I did get in some oatmeal at breakfast, but it went downhill after that. After doing an interview I decided to stop by a few shops near the area I was in. The first store I went into was a chocolate shop. Anndd I came out with chocolate covered graham crackers and peanut butter cups. Soo delicous! Then I went to a small coffee shop and right when I walked in I saw a picture that said “chocolate peanut butter blended iced coffee”. I was instantly sold. There was no going back. So I ordered that and it was really good!!

That night my sorority had a social with a fraternity and we ended the night with smores. Needless to say I ate more chocolate. My eating has been all over the place this week and since Wednesday it’s just gone down from there.

2. Greek Olympics. The past two weeks some of my sorority sisters and I have been out late practicing for Greek Olympics on Saturday. I’m the captain of our chariot team and I’m on the pyramid team. So we’ve been meeting every night to practice and improve so that Saturday we can win!! Greek Olympics is my favorite time of the year in regards to sorority events. I love getting to hang out with the girls and get to know girls better than I don’t know well. It’s fun to be competitive together and to see what everyone’s strengths are. I’m sooo excited for Saturday, so I’ll let you know how it goes!!

3. Last registration. I registered for my last semester of “classes” on Thursday. I no longer will have real classes to attend, but I’ll be at a high school all day every day doing my student teaching. I’m excited to graduate in December, but I still can’t believe it’s already been 4 years!!

My friends and I meet at 5:30 am on the morning of registration and have breakfast. So this time we met at Denny’s bright and early.

I had the french toast breakfast with 7 grain bread (not that it makes it much healthier), bananas, strawberries, and a side of peanut butter. Also, some scrambled eggs too. That kept me full for hours.

4. Workouts. This week has been another good week of working out (my diet on the other hand has been sketch). I’m so thankful for my weight lifting class so that I have scheduled time in the gym. On Monday I did an arm workout. Tuesday I went for a run.

Wednesday my best friend killed me with another leg workout.  I’ve been sore all week since then in my hamstrings and quads.

Wall Balls 18lb ball 10 reps x 3

Deadlifts 45lb bar 10 reps x 3

Bosu ball cable squats 10 reps x 3

Alternating Bulgarian squats on bosu ball 10 reps on each leg x 3

Morning glories 10 reps x 3

Body weight squats 30 reps x 3

Now let me tell you. The bosu ball cable squats are no joke. Watch the video below. These things are hard. My first attempt I looked like I was trying to dance on the bosu. I looked ridiculous. Once I got the movement down it went  a lot smoother. It definitely shows you how strong or weak your core is.

5. Pinterest love. Lastly, here are a few of my favorite Pinterest pins for the week.

Indian cat.

I’m so ready for summer. Love this outfit.

So thankful that my life has been peaceful for it gives life to my body.

I’m so happy it’s Friday and the weekend is here!! My parents will be here in just in a few hours for the weekend. We’ll get to have our last big Greek event for the year with Greek Olympics and I hope the Zetas come out on top!! Have a great weekend everyone!

Have you ever had an all chocolate eating day? Do you like working out with a friend or partner?
